"I went to Nepal thinking I would have a unique opportunity to learn about the Nepali people and culture while providing a little bit of value in return; but I came back with endless self reflections, valuable lessons in my field of work, and exposure to opportunities where I can continue to make an impact. Tech2Empower empowered me while enabling me to empower others - I am out of words for how meaningful this program has been for me!"
WAKE offers a number of volunteer opportunities each year through Tech2Empower programs. Volunteer Advisors work with women-led nonprofits and social enterprises in various program locations. Volunteers provide consulting, mentorship, and technology training. They also collaborate on strategic projects proposed by the organizations we support that enhance the capacity and impact of their work. Additionally, during programs Advisors may host tech and leadership workshops for students, plus engage in cultural enrichment activities, networking events, and local community visits.
To become a WAKE Advisor, you should have professional experience in fields such as technology, communications, finance, entrepreneurship, leadership development or other relevant areas. Advisors often possess strong skills in strategic planning, project management, training, and/or mentorship. While prior volunteer experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Above all we seek individuals with a growth mindset, who are passionate about social justice, eager to share their expertise, value cultural humility and the opportunity to learn, and committed to making a positive impact.
The time commitment for WAKE Advisors varies depending on the program. International programs take place over one week with some pre- and post-program virtual engagement, while U.S.-based programs are typically 1-2 days in-person. Advisors are expected to participate fully during the program, which includes attending preparatory webinars and meetings, volunteer-related programming, and group cultural activities. There may also be opportunities for ongoing virtual support and follow-up with the partner organizations.
Experience working with nonprofits is not required. We provide training and resources to ensure all Advisors are well-prepared to support our partner organizations. The key qualifications are your professional skills, willingness to learn, and passion for contributing to social impact.
WAKE provides comprehensive training and support for all volunteer Advisors. Before the program, Advisors participate in orientation webinars to understand the program goals, cultural context, and specific needs of the partner organizations. During the program, Advisors receive ongoing guidance from WAKE staff, local experts and partners, and collaborate with fellow Advisors. Post-program, Advisors have access to resources and support for continued engagement with their partner organizations.

Advisors also engage with community members, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural context in which they are working. These experiences not only enrich your personal journey but also enhance your ability to contribute effectively to the local organizations and communities.
