“For me, Tech2Empower is one of the most impactful ways to engage with nonprofits in a meaningful way. The design of the program - especially the part requiring nonprofit leaders and tech advisors to spend a [time] focusing on a well-defined project - enables a thoughtful and productive exchange of ideas that leads to actionable next steps for the nonprofit. For the advisors, it is an invaluable opportunity to get a peek into the strategic and/or operational challenges faced by resource-strapped nonprofits. In addition to learning more about a social cause we knew little about before that day, we benefit tremendously from the challenge of having to think outside the box and apply our skills in a completely different context. It is deeply gratifying to see the look of joy and relief on the faces of our nonprofit partners at the end of a long day, once we all come to an agreement on what the strategy is and define the plan ahead in concrete terms.”
There is something deeply fulfilling about directly impacting the lives of others, especially when you get to see how your work moves the needle for equality, equity, and social justice. Through WAKE, I’ve been fortunate to have this experience, particularly through Tech2Empower, WAKE's flagship initiative. Furthermore, serving on the board of WAKE has allowed me a unique opportunity to contribute to a cause larger than myself and shape an organization committed to driving deep impact.
Tech2Empower has allowed me to assist nonprofits tackling some of the thorniest issues at the hyper-local level—where their impact is tangible and immediate. The range of issues I've encountered has been both enlightening and transformative. From developing strategy for an organization promoting body positivity, to creating a digital platform for a nonprofit protecting the Black community from predatory practices in the tobacco industry, to building an e-commerce store for a nonprofit promoting reproductive health awareness—each experience has been profoundly eye opening. As much as our team contributed to these nonprofits, one could argue that we gained just as much, if not more, from the experience. Some of the time, we encountered issues we were already passionate about, but the innovative approaches these organizations were taking were truly groundbreaking. At other times, we got introduced to causes we hadn’t previously been aware of, learning deeply from organizations working tirelessly on issues that have defined their communities for generations. This profound exchange of ideas and knowledge has happened each time I have participated in Tech2Empower and touched me on a deep level, even as we collaborate on seemingly mundane tasks like building a website or developing a strategy. This is why, as someone deeply committed to leveraging technology for social good, my experience with WAKE has been both humbling and empowering.
Serving on WAKE’s board has allowed me to witness firsthand how Tech2Empower bridges the gap between the tech industry and nonprofits that are often underserved by technology. It connects tech professionals with nonprofits that often lack access to crucial technological resources. This initiative stands out for how it enables us to leverage our skills to drive meaningful change in communities that need it most. The opportunity to collaborate with passionate and diverse volunteers has been a wonderful learning experience, a benefit I didn't even consider at first. Working together with other folks in tech who are equally passionate about changing the world for the better reminds me of the collective power we have to make a difference in ways that truly matter.
What makes WAKE and Tech2Empower especially remarkable is how they allow us to bring our expertise from some of the most cutting-edge and innovative companies in the world to bear on these critical issues. We have the chance to help these organizations solve real-world problems, making our professional skills not just valuable in the boardroom but also transformative in the communities these nonprofits serve in. It’s incredibly powerful to witness and be part of this change, knowing that even the smallest efforts can make a significant difference in someone’s life. It’s a privilege to be part of this journey.
